Alright, so I didn’t plan for my brain stem to fall out mid-sentence, but it kind of proved the point.

And the meme you’re looking at, it’s funny, but it also shows what’s really happening in the brain when we do this.

Because when you think about something you want and you picture it like it’s happening right now, your brain doesn’t stop and argue with you, it responds and you can feel it when you actually see it in your head, when you feel it a little in your body, when you start imagining the sounds or the smells or whatever makes it feel real to you.

That’s when those chemicals kick in, dopamine, serotonin, the ones that make you feel calmer and more settled instead of wound up.

At the same time, the part of your brain that’s always scanning for problems backs off a bit, it’s not bracing for impact, so every negative thing doesn’t hit as hard.

That’s usually what people mean when they say someone seems calm in the middle of chaos, it’s not that nothing’s going on, it’s just that their brain isn’t reacting to everything like it needs to sound the alarm.

Your brain doesn’t really care whether something is happening right now or whether you’re imagining it clearly, if it feels real enough, it responds the same way.

So when you imagine a future moment like it’s already here, you’re not doing anything fancy, you’re letting your system settle before it has to, you’re getting familiar with what steady feels like instead of waiting until you’re already overwhelmed.

And over time, that changes how you respond, how fast you escalate, how much energy you burn on things that don’t actually need it.

Also, apparently, keep track of your brain stem, it’s been through enough today.
