There are people walking around with garages full of stuff, closets packed with things they barely use, subscriptions charging their credit cards every month for things they forgot they signed up for, and storage units holding cr@p nobody has looked at in years.
We are attached to so many THINGS but we are disconnected from the people sitting right beside us.

It’s crazy because we spend years trying to create a better life for the people we love. We work longer hours, say yes to one more project, answer one more email before bed, and convince ourselves we're doing it because we're being responsible. Then one day we look up and realize we feel alone. It doesn't happen at all at once. It happens one late night at the office, one canceled dinner, one phone call answered during family time, one vacation where work is too important to wait, and one conversation where we're physically present but mentally somewhere else. Each moment feels small on its own, but over time, they hurt us and our relationships.

Sometimes we (consciously or subconsciously) believe the people we love will always understand why we were so busy. Sometimes they do. Sometimes what they really wanted was just more of US.That doesn't mean changing your entire life overnight. It just means putting your phone away during dinner, leaving work a little earlier once in a while, looking someone in the eyes instead of multitasking, or giving a person your full attention for ten uninterrupted minutes. Those little moments are often the ones people you care about remember most.

THREE things I invite you to start doing to ensure you don’t find yourself alone:

  1. Pay attention to how you make others feel after you have interacted with them. Everywhere, work, home, the grocery store. Everywhere.
  2. Start giving people at home AT LEAST as much energy as you give at work.
  3. Go out and smell some roses. Literally.
