I once worked with someone who said yes so fast, she barely gave herself time to think. She said yes to help, yes to keep things moving, yes to avoid making anyone uncomfortable, and before long she was tired, frustrated, and wondering why everyone kept asking for more. What she finally saw was simple. She was giving so much attention to keeping everyone else happy, she had stopped paying attention to what she actually had the time, energy, or space to give.

I’m grateful I had the opportunity to share that conversation with PMIC on April 25. We talked about how saying no is hard for so many people because they have tied it to guilt for far too long. They worry it will sound rude. They worry it will disappoint someone. They worry it will make them look difficult. So instead, they say yes before they have even asked themselves if they really can, then carry the weight of that decision long after the conversation is over.

What stood out most that day was how the entire room understood this was never just about one word. It was about learning how to answer people in a way that is honest, clear, and still respectful. You can be kind and still hold your ground. You can be helpful and still have limits. You can care about what someone needs without ignoring what you need too.

We talked about how even a simple change in the way you respond can change the whole direction of a conversation. When people learn how to say no in a better way, they speak more clearly, they carry less frustration, and they stop agreeing to things they were never able to give their full yes to in the first place. This change reaches far beyond your work. It changes how you lead, how you communicate, and how people learn to respect your time, your energy, and your boundaries.

How many things are sitting on your plate right now because you said YES when you really should have paused?

Comment “Clear and Kind” and I’d be happy to help you lead that conversation better.
