I have a client, let’s call him Mike, and Mike is smart, experienced, well respected, and moves fast, sometimes faster than the people in the room with him.
Mike truly believed he was being helpful, efficient, and decisive, because in his mind people were circling the point, taking too long to land the plane, and he already knew where the conversation was going, so jumping in felt like leadership to him.
What he didn’t see at first was how it landed on his team.
Over time, people shared fewer ideas, they shortened their thinking, they learned to rush instead of reflect, not because they lacked insight, but because finishing a thought didn’t feel worth the effort anymore.
When his head of operations finally pulled him aside and told him that people were starting to avoid speaking up and honestly didn’t enjoy working in the room with him, Mike was shocked, because he thought he was doing his job well.
This is the part I see over and over again with high performing leaders, interrupting rarely comes from arrogance, it comes from a nervous system that doesn’t slow down easily, and we tend to label that as urgency or decisiveness instead of what it really is, difficulty self regulating in the moment.
Here’s what tends to land when this clicks, being quick doesn’t automatically make you effective, and being the fastest thinker in the room doesn’t mean you need to be the first one to speak, because the space you leave is often where trust grows and where your team rises to meet you.
If this feels familiar, you’re not broken and you’re definitely not alone, but it is something you can change with awareness and the right tools.
If you want a simple, realistic way to work on this without slowing your business down, message me and I’ll show you what I use with busy executives who want stronger teams without losing their edge.
