“You Really Have to Be Careful When Asking for Anonymous Feedback”

You’ve seen it — someone sends out an “anonymous feedback” form thinking it’ll bring truth and transformation.
What it actually brings… is fear, vagueness, and a whole lot of “who wrote that?” energy.

Look, anonymous feedback sounds good in theory — like a safe space to speak freely.
But here’s the thing: when people don’t trust the system, anonymity doesn’t make them honest.
It makes them cautious.
They start speaking in riddles.
They water down what they really mean.

And everyone ends up squinting at the results trying to decode which “mystery coworker” said what.

That’s not feedback. That’s theater.

And trust me, I’ve seen entire teams spiral from it.
Leaders trying to “fix” problems that weren’t even real.
People whispering instead of talking.
And cultures built on guessing instead of growing.

Let’s call this what it really is…
If your people can’t say something out loud and still feel safe, you don’t have a feedback problem.
You have a trust problem.

So before you launch that next anonymous survey, ask yourself:

“Do we have enough safety to have real, direct, human conversations?”
