When “Efficiency” Backfires
One of my clients (we’ll call him Mike) was convinced he was saving time by interrupting his team and giving them the answer. In his mind, it was efficient. In theirs, it was dismissive. And the longer it went on, the quieter his team became.
Interrupting isn’t about efficiency. It’s about regulation. Neuroscience shows that when people are cut off mid-thought, their brain releases cortisol (the stress hormone). That stress narrows their creativity and makes them less likely to speak up again. In other words, the “fastest” leader actually slows the team down in the long run.
So if you tend to jump in with the answer, try this instead:

Count to 5 before responding. That pause gives your team’s prefrontal cortex time to process and share better ideas.

Write down your thought first. This reduces the urge to blurt it out.

Ask before telling. “What are you seeing here?” creates ownership and engagement.
Being the smartest person in the room doesn’t mean talking the most. It means pausing the most. That’s where trust is built. That is where your team actually grows.
