Something small someone said got under my skin this week. It wasn’t a blow-up or some dramatic confrontation, just one of those comments that sneaks in quietly and hangs around longer than it should.

My first instinct was to explain myself or replay the moment later, usually at the worst possible time, like while brushing my teeth or trying to fall asleep. Instead, I paused. Not to be calm or enlightened, but simply to ask myself why that comment landed the way it did.

That pause matters more than people think. It gives your brain enough space to realize you’re not actually in danger, which is when your body settles and your thinking comes back online. That’s not mindset work or emotional discipline; that’s your nervous system doing what it’s designed to do.

People who seem naturally positive aren’t skipping over hard moments or pretending things don’t bother them. They’ve just learned how to step back from what triggers them long enough to see it clearly, without turning it into a personal threat they have to defend against.

That’s why this stuff changes more than just your mood. Over time, it affects your health, your relationships, and even how people experience being around you. The meme makes it funny, but the pause is what actually makes it livable.

So if something someone said recently stuck with you, you don’t need to fix it or explain it away. Try getting curious about it instead and see what that curiosity creates for you.

If this feels familiar, you’re not alone. And if you want help practicing this in real life, not just thinking about it after the fact, I’m here.
