Have you ever noticed that sometimes the habits that made you successful are the same habits that eventually start getting in your way?

I was recently giving a keynote at a leadership event and the CEO shared something I heard from so many successful leaders. His company grew; his team grew, but somehow every problem, decision, and question still found its way back to him.

“How can I get them to take more ownership?”, he asked me. Of course, I answered his question with a question, “Do you step in and give them answers or do you put it back on them to find at least three possible answers to whatever question they have?” He looked at me as if I had just asked him how to solve world hunger. Totally perplexed and bemused at the same time.

His face betrayed him and gave me the answer before he could verbalize it: He wanted people to make decisions, while unintentionally stepping in every time someone struggled.

He shared that what made him into a millionaire is being the one who solved problems, jumped in, and figured things out so it was hard for him not to do that anymore. "I get it!”, I said. “You can absolutely continue doing that, as long as you recognize that you are enabling the very behavior you are complaining about."

I went on to share that great leadership is not measured by how much everyone needs you. It is measured by how much stronger people become because of you.

Three things to think about this week:

  1. Are you solving problems your team should be learning how to solve?
  2. Are you creating leaders or creating bottlenecks because people must wait for your approval?
  3. Are your daily actions building the next version of your company or keeping you stuck in the old one?
Sometimes the hardest part of growth is letting go of the very thing that made you successful.
