The Day My Friend Realized She Kept Moving the Goal post

A friend and I were having coffee recently when she started sharing everything that had happened in her life over the past several years. She had worked her way into a great position, increased her income, paid off much of her debt, watched her kids thrive, and achieved several goals she had wanted for years.

Then she said, "I don't understand why I still feel like I'm trying to get somewhere.

"Whenever she reached a goal, she immediately focused on the next one. When she got the promotion she wanted, she started thinking about the next step. When she paid off one debt, another financial goal took its place. As soon as one problem was solved, her attention shifted to the next thing that needed fixing. There was always something else to accomplish, and she's not alone.

I've noticed that many of us live this way. We spend years working toward something, and when we finally get there, we barely pause before turning our attention to the next thing. We tell ourselves life will feel different after this project, after the promotion, after this busy season, after the kids get older, after the business grows, or once we finally catch up. But when we get there, we start thinking about what's next.

As we sat there talking, she laughed and said, "I think I've been chasing a finish line that keeps moving."

Isn't that the truth?! There will always be another goal, another challenge, another responsibility, another thing competing for our attention. If we're waiting until everything is done before allowing ourselves to feel happy, peaceful, or grateful, we could be waiting a very long time.

I asked her if she wanted to just vent or if she wanted a little coaching and she gave me the greenlight to coach her, so I invited her to do just two simple things: intentionally spend more time with people she cared about (I also benefit from this one!) and stop filling every open space on her calendar.

I think all of us need that reminder from time to time. We should always strive to be better and achieve more. We just have to make sure we don't spend so much time chasing the next thing that we forget to enjoy the things we once prayed for.

Do me a favor and ask yourself

these three things:

  1. What is something you wanted five years ago that you have today?
  2. How often do you tell yourself you'll be happy once the next goal is reached?
  3. When was the last time you gave yourself permission to appreciate what you've accomplished and what you have while you're still working toward where you want to go?
