I see this all the time and honestly, it makes me cringe a little.
Leaders who use fear think they’re being “strong.” What they’re really getting is people walking on eggshells, triple-checking every move, doing just enough to stay out of trouble. Yes, they comply. No, they don’t commit.
There’s no trust. No one’s thinking, “I’ve got your back.” They’re thinking, “Don’t mess up.”
And when you actually need your team to go the extra mile? Stay late. Step up. Go to the mat for you?
They won’t. Why would they?
Fear doesn’t build loyalty. It builds distance.
Fear-based leadership usually comes from insecurity. Losing control. Losing status. Losing money. Losing the image you’ve worked so hard to protect.
So the real question isn’t whether fear “works.”
It’s this: What are you afraid of?
Because when leaders deal with their own fear, they stop needing everyone else to live in it.
And that’s when real trust shows up.
If fear is quietly driving decisions at the top, it’s worth a conversation. Message me.
