Have you ever had one difficult employee/manager that takes over an entire meeting while your best people hardly get any airtime? The meetings are constantly frustrating and unproductive.

Does this sound familiar? You’re not alone.

One of my clients was struggling with that as well. She has a manager who just can’t seem to get along with others. Every team conversation centered around them missing goals, skipping important conversations, or struggling to use the company's systems. Nobody knew what to do about him. What’s even more frustrating is that the CEO was not spending as much time on managers who WERE succeeding.

The strongest managers were building relationships daily, with every interaction. They had difficult conversations early, earned their employees' trust, and stayed connected instead of spending every day putting out fires. They also helped each other succeed.

The struggling manager spent his time reacting instead of helping and just kept finding more ways in which he was a victim.

What’s worse is that people on this manager’s team were getting burned out even though they were not working overtime and they were taking more vacations and days off than the others. Every day it felt like they were running a marathon where the finish line kept moving. It was just too exhausting to carry the emotional weight that their manager kept dumping on them.

Of course, I’m helping the CEO and we are fixing this right up! It can’t continue - even if the employee/manager has been with the company a long time.

As my client is working through this,

here are three thoughts I invite you to think about this week:

  1. Spend as much time elevating your strongest people as you do trying to fix the ones who are struggling. We can’t have your best folks be your flight risks.
  2. Look beyond the numbers. Great results achieved through fear, burnout, or constant pressure eventually show up somewhere else in the business.
  3. Before jumping to a solution, look for the patterns. They're usually pointing to the real problem and usually that problem can be fixed.
