“Can I vent for a second?” someone asks, and the other person says, “Sure, what’s going on?” Before long the conversation turns into a list of frustrations about coworkers, staff, and everything that went wrong that day, and the listener sits there nodding, trying to be supportive, carrying the weight of a problem they cannot solve. Most people have been in that seat at some point, absorbing someone else’s frustration and walking away feeling heavier than when the conversation started.
Then an uncomfortable thought pops up, because if it feels draining to receive that kind of venting, there is a good chance we have all done it to someone else at some point too. I see this pattern often in offices. I worked with a litigator who is incredibly talented in the courtroom, sharp and respected, yet in the office he would unload his frustrations about paralegals, associates, and staff to the other attorneys. They would nod along and sympathize in the moment, but when I spoke with them privately they shared a different perspective. They felt burdened by conversations they could not fix, and it made them question something else, if he talks about everyone this way, what might he be saying about me when I’m not around.
That is where the real damage starts to show up, after the venting ends and people begin questioning the safety of the relationship, when trust starts wearing down and coworkers become more guarded with each other, when the culture shifts and people stop feeling comfortable speaking openly.
So the real question becomes, “Where should that energy go instead?” Maybe it goes into a journal, maybe it gets burned off at the gym, maybe it turns into a walk around the block to clear your head, maybe it becomes a direct conversation with the person who can actually solve the issue.
The people we think are our allies, the ones we vent to the most, are often the very relationships we slowly weaken without realizing it. Once we pause and notice that it is a pattern, we can start shifting it, protecting trust instead of draining it, and choosing a healthier place to put that frustration so it does not spill onto everyone around us.

If this made you pause for a second and think about a conversation you’ve had recently, you’re not alone. Most leaders never realize when venting starts eroding trust around them. If you want a few simple tools to redirect that energy without damaging relationships or culture, send me a message and I’ll share them with you. 🦁
