My daughter was maybe two or three when she looked at me with that tiny philosopher face and said she chose me and Rich as her parents. She could barely form sentences and somehow she was already dropping cosmic TED Talks over breakfast.
And what caught my attention was that she wasn’t performing or reaching for my reaction. Kids don’t perform until we accidentally train them to. They just say what feels true before we download our stress, our fears, our beliefs and all our adult nonsense into their tiny little operating systems.
Her words got under my skin in the best way.
They made me think about how every one of us lands in Earth School with a strange syllabus we didn’t read but somehow agreed to. I honestly believe we pick our parents because we pick our curriculum. Our lessons. Our bruises. Our breakthroughs.
And if that is true, then the meme of the grumpy toddler basically becomes a documentary.
The people you love, the people who raised you, the people who cracked you open in ways you did not ask for, were likely the exact people you needed to grow into the leader you are right now.
Your edge comes from your origin story.
Your presence comes from the storms you lived through.
Your ability to read a room comes from the emotional homework nobody graded you on.
The leaders who do the deepest work are the ones who stop trying to outrun the story and start understanding the assignment.
So I’ll ask you what I asked myself after that tiny guru spoke.
